CUSTOM BUTCHER BLOCK ISLANDS FAQ’S

Q.What is the difference between a “Chop’n Block” (End-Grain) and a standard island? 

A. A standard “Edge-Grain” island is beautiful and durable for general use. However, a Chop’n Block (End-Grain) is the ultimate chef’s surface. Because the wood fibers stand vertically, your knife slides between the fibers rather than cutting across them. This keeps your knives sharper and allows the wood to “self-heal,” hiding scratch marks over time.

Q. Will the wood warp or crack with the Ohio seasons?

A. Great question. Our wood is kiln-dried to the perfect moisture content for the Northeast Ohio climate. We also use “Expansion Fasteners” during installation. This allows the wood to breathe naturally as the humidity changes in your home without ever cracking or pulling away from the cabinets.

Q. Can I actually cut directly on my new island?

A. It depends on the finish you choose! If you want to use your island as a massive cutting board, we apply a Food-Safe Mineral Oil or Hardwax. If you want the island for looks and dining but plan on using separate cutting boards, we can apply a Permanent “Varnique” Finish that requires zero maintenance and resists stains.

Q. How do you handle sinks and moisture?

A. We aren’t just woodworkers; we’re installers. For islands with sinks, we use a Marine-Grade Epoxy Sealant inside the cutout. This creates a 100% waterproof barrier that prevents rot, ensuring your island stays beautiful even with heavy daily sink use.

Q. Can you match the stain to my existing cabinets?

A. Yes. While many people love the natural “clear coat” look of Walnut or Cherry, we can custom-match stains to your flooring or cabinetry. We provide physical samples for you to approve in your own kitchen lighting before we start the build.

Q. I have a massive kitchen. Can you do oversized islands?

A. Absolutely. We specialize in “Jumbo Islands” that are too big for a single slab of stone. We hand-select boards with matching grain patterns and use professional “Dog-Bone” joinery on-site to create a seamless, rock-solid surface regardless of the length.

Q. Is a wood island a good idea if I have kids?

A. It’s actually the best idea. Stone chips and stays cold. Wood is warm, quiet (no loud clanking of plates!), and incredibly forgiving. If a kid draws on it or drops something heavy, it can be sanded and fixed. You can’t “fix” a crack in a quartz slab.

Q. What is the lead time for a custom build in Medina/Cleveland?

A. Because we build and finish everything right here in Wadsworth, we don’t have the “middle-man” delays of big-box stores. Typically, we go from your final design approval to a fully installed island in 4 to 6 weeks.
